10 Beauty Myths Debunked

Everyone’s got an opinion on beauty do’s and dont’s. You may already have an arsenal of little tricks and bits of advice you’ve picked up over the years, but don’t be misled. Many of the old wives tales you’ve come to rely on may be totally false!  We’ve got the Scoop on the top 10 beauty myths debunked.

  1. Shaving your legs will make hair grow back thicker and darker. FALSE! Though your hair may feel coarse and stubbly, trust us, it’s no thicker. The reason is that short regrowth will always feel more prickly compared to longer hair, since hair is widest at the base (follicle) and gets more narrow and fine at the tip. After shaving, the base grows out, making it appear thicker.
  2. You can get rid of cellulite. FALSE! Not even liposuction can permanently eliminate cellulite once and for all. You can, however, reduce the lumpy appearance temporarily with moisturizers or firming creams that contain Caffeine.  We recommend Rodial Skinny Beach, a revolutionary lotion that contains SPF, Caffeine and Saccharide Salt to help reduce cellulite while protecting you from the sun and actually boosting your ability to tan!
  3. You can actually shrink facial pores. FALSE! Though pores can appear larger if they’re clogged with dirt and bacteria, they never really grow or shrink. You can make them appear smaller with products that contain Retinol and Alpha Hydroxys or with natural tighteners like egg whites. Try Perricones MD Intensive Pore Minimizer, a gentle formula that exfoliates and tightens with Salicylic Acid and Alpha Lipoic Acid to remove dirt and oil, leaving your skin feeling fresh, young and healthy.
  4. Chocolate and greasy foods cause acne. FALSE! There is no particular food that has been proven to cause breakouts. As a general rule, it’s never a good idea to rub greasy hands (whether caused by food or something else) on your face, as it will transfer and clog pores. Acne is mostly caused by hormones, overactive oil glands, heredity and dead skin cells that get trapped in the pores.  But a poor overall diet can be a skin irritant, so it’s always good to take it easy on the fast food and sweets.
  5. Brushing your hair 100 times will make it shine. FALSE! Actually, it will make it more likely to break. Stick to a few gentle strokes to help distribute national oils and reflect more light. Moderate brushing also keeps hair follicles healthy by stimulating blood flow to the scalp. And always avoid brushing when hair is wet or damp as it is more likely to snap—opt for a wide-toothed comb instead.
  6. If you pluck a gray hair, 10 more will grow in its place. FALSE! This is just bad math; it’s impossible for 10 hair follicles to grow in the place of one.
  7. Popping the occasional zit is okay. FALSE! This is never a good idea unless you are absolutely sure you know what you’re doing. Poking and prodding a zit spreads oil and bacteria and aggravates your pores, leaving you prone to further breakouts. It can also lead to scarring or push bacteria deeper into your pore, prolonging healing.
  8. Cocoa butter helps get rid of stretch marks. FALSE! While this and other creams and lotions may help reduce their appearance by keeping skin moisturized and boosting Collagen, eliminating stretch marks entirely just can’t be done without surgery.
  9. You can reverse split ends. FALSE! -The only surefire way to get rid of split ends is to snip them off. You can also help prevent them by limiting use of heat stylers like hair dryers and flat irons, which dry out hair and can cause the cuticle to fray.
  10. Rubbing your eyes will cause crows feet. FALSE! Tugging your eyes while rubbing them (or even putting on eyeliner) won’t cause wrinkles. But repetitive movements from smiling or frowning can contribute, since these movements can break down Collagen over time.

    Dear Joan,
I have lost hair due to illness and I try to cover up the baldness as best as I could. But, some people hurt my feelings by suggesting going through with hair replacement. Well, I saw your TV program about Great Hair Day and purchased 4 kits of your cover up product. Well, I have to tell you that I am a tough customer. I received your powder and I LOVE IT!!!!! I tried it and I didn’t want to wash it out. I hope this product will be avaliable forever. I feel great now. I have more confidence on my job. Thanks Joan..I am so excited and can’t wait to tell my friends with thinning hair! Diana
