My First Dinner Party

By on July 10, 2012, in Home and Furniture

When I was younger my mother used to host the most amazing dinner parties.

I remember helping her set the table

with her grandmother’s china and silver and linen monogrammed napkins. She would prepare amazing one-of-a-kind hors d’oeuvres on silver trays with tiny sword toothpicks.

Those sword toothpicks were the best.

And late at night, when I was supposed to be in bed, I would tip toe down and sit at the top of the stairs and listen to the extraordinary dinner conversation drifting back from the dining room. My eyes would gaze in awe as the chandelier lights flickered and the elegant guests quietly spoke here and there with an occasional tinkling laugh.

Those dinner parties were wonderful…..so sophisticated and worldly and all that a little girl could ever dream of. They made such an impression on me. And as I sat and listened to the grown-ups and their conversations, I dreamed of the day when I would host a dinner party of my very own.

And when we purchased our dream home, a turn-of-the-century farmhouse in the middle of the rural countryside and first saw this dining room, I knew.

I knew.

This was the place for those long-ago dinner party dreams to come true.

So we painted the room and added moldings and furniture and rugs and curtains.

After all, what would a dinner-party room be without curtains?

Especially smocked burlap curtains like these.

Curtains sewn with 108″ of incredibly textured burlap.

Burlap curtains….just waiting for a dinner party to happen.

And when the room was ready, I set the table for company.

I set the table for my very own dinner party.

I can imagine the little girl listening and dreaming of hosting parties of her own and now all grown-up with her girls doing the same. The curtains certainly add to the magic!

Sooo, so great!! I am with everyone else swooning over the smocked goodness, and Kari. 🙂

There was a rerun of the Nate Berkus show on today and the person they showed in the House Proud segment looked like she had the same curtains in her master bedroom!! They’re making the rounds … definitely beautiful.

Now I have to go get ready for the dinner party at Kari’s.
