My name is Josh Allen and I am the founder and owner of Companion in St. Louis, Missouri. When I started Companion 20 years ago, I was motivated by a simple mission:  to create artisan bread that is wholesome, fresh and delicious.  Even though our product line has grown from a fleet of just six breads and now includes two cafes and dozens of breads, pastries, and specialty products, our mission remains the same.

The Lazy Morning Companion BakeryAt Companion, we believe that food is about community – a meal enjoyed with a companion is always richer.  In many ways, the food that we create at Companion is a celebration of our community in St. Louis. We source ingredients from local purveyors, collaborate with area chefs, and provide classic St. Louis treats that embrace our city’s history and heritage.

with a delicate and crunchy crust. It’s a local classic, but if you didn’t grow up around St. Louis, it’s very possible that you’ve never experienced its gooey goodness. Dating back to the time of the Great Depression, gooey butter cake was actually created on accident when a local baker mistakenly switched the ratio of flour and sugar.  The result has turned into a culinary craze in this part of the country!

to fix something that definitely was not broken, Companion’s Gooey Butter Cake celebrates the original. We use brown sugar to give a beautiful caramel undertone which pairs wonderfully with coffee for breakfast, brunch or a decadent dessert (served with a scoop of cinnamon ice cream).

We’re excited for you to try a (very delicious) piece of St. Louis tradition with your friends and family. Enjoy!

Sometimes accidents result in great discoveries – Columbus and the “West Indies” and now Companion’s Gooey Butter Cake.

You’re right–we’ve never heard of Butter Cake in these parts. Although I have been to Missouri, I’ve not passed through Saint Louis. Now I have an excuse. Rock on with the flour!
