Soft Surroundings’ President and founder, Robin Sheldon, and our design team took their annual inspiration trip to France this past spring. On this treasure hunt through the French countryside, they searched local markets for fabulous ideas for our apparel and home furnishing collections. Their findings included antique fabrics, prints, and architectural designs to assist in creating unique, exciting merchandise. We interviewed them after their journey and want to share
their stories with you.
Why choose France as the location for your annual inspiration trip?
We love France, because its beauty, romance and casual style are iconic to Soft Surroundings.
We’ve been meaning to ask…what is a brocante?
Brocante is a French word used to describe a flea market.
Of all the amazing food you ate while in France, describe those dishes that are a must- try.
We ate everything from coffee and croissants to charcuterie plates and of course, frites (French fries)! There were plenty of French cheeses and pastries to sample along the way, as well as fresh produce from the markets.
Can our customers look forward to seeing any more one-of-a-kind items?
Yes, we are continuing to increase our one-of-a-kind offerings, with many new Brocante antiques available in our At Home collection. You can see them on our website and read the stories behind some of the pieces!
Did you spot any emerging apparel fashion trends?
We saw lots of polka-dots, lace, and layers of neutrals.
We often hear that French expression “joie de vivre” and wondered if you experienced it first-hand. How do the French embrace this philosophy of living life to the fullest?
One good example is that the stores close from noon to 2pm, so that everyone can enjoy a leisurely lunch!
We LOVED the photos you shared of all the French dogs! Are dogs as beloved a pet in France as they are in America?
Even more so – many hotels in France even have pet menus for Room Service!
