Style Revival: New Life for Tired Décor

By on March 5, 2015, in Soft Surroundings

To inject some excitement into home décor that has grown a little stale and unimaginative is just a matter of getting an idea. Luckily, we have plenty of those to share with you! And all of them are sure to pump instant life into any room you choose.

First, it’s helpful to think about the mood change you’d like to achieve. Do you want your living room to have more “oomph”, more presence and power? Do you want your bedroom to suggest fantasy or femininity, or both? Could your home office use some more creative energy? And what about your entertainment room? Is it just plain old blah?

We’ve put the spotlight on a few transformative trends that will inspire you and hopefully reinvigorate things for spring.

Show-stopping drama is a great way to make an unforgettable first impression. That’s why drama is a great trend to infuse into a weary entryway or well-worn living room. Bold accents and furniture are a simple way to carry this out, but it’s also possible to create drama with delicate eye-catchers like Soft Surroundings’ Katherine Chandelier Lamp.

You’re accustomed to seeing gilt chandeliers like this, trimmed with crystal as a focal point in a formal dining room. But the same elements are unexpected and distinctive when they’re recast as a table lamp on a console in the entry, or as a floor lamp in the living room. In these rooms, they are out-of-the-ordinary and even more dramatic.

Certainly the opposite of drama is subtlety. Or is it? Someone once said if you want people to listen, whisper. As a décor trend, a whisper of color or unique style can be enough to resuscitate the sleepiest rooms.

Our Le Vallee Du Loire Cabinet is a sweet example of subtlety. The soft, hand finished verdigris wash has an exquisite patina. Paired with hand-carved ivory trim on raised panels and handsome antiqued brass hardware, this piece speaks volumes about its style and yours. The upper cabinet has four adjustable shelves and the bottom cabinet has one more. It’s the perfect pick-me-up for the dining room, entertainment room or home office. The transformation will be quiet, but unmistakable.

Adding a soupçon of whimsy to a room is an instant resuscitator too. Whimsical elements bring charm and a casual friendliness. So if you have a room or space that you want to be more light-hearted, inject flights of fantasy.

Our romantic Annalisa Sheer Panel couldn’t be a better choice to add dreaminess and femininity. Each poly chiffon panel is a waterfall of ivory cascading from tied tops. The handmade organza roses are hand-sewn on the bottom third. Picture this window treatment in the boudoir next to the ruffled-back Violet Chair, or framing a window at the top of an elegant staircase. So fanciful. So easy.

Accents that draw from nature, especially beautiful blooms, are a reliable way to bring a breath of fresh air to a space. That’s why a vase of flowers works such magic!

The French have been hanging gorgeous floral tapestries in their chateaux for centuries and that’s where we took our cue when we made Soft Surroundings’ luxurious Aubusson bedding. Gold, rose, sage and burgundy cotton threads virtually paint roses across the camel background of this coverlet. You’d mistake it for fine art, except it’s petal-soft too. A gold cord or delicate fringe encircles the shams.

Two turtledoves pose alongside hydrangeas and roses in our hand-needlepointed Aubusson Pillows. Toss them on a natural colored linen sofa or upholstered chair and they’ll pop almost as well as the real thing from your garden.

Another way to refresh a room is to edit. When you remove pieces of furniture you can rearrange what’s left in a whole new way. Less can really be more. But minimalism doesn’t have to be taken to extremes. We want our homes to be cozy and functional too!

A common design tips is to replace some of your furnishings with pieces that do double-duty, like our Bruges Secretary. In a sitting room it stands stately and elegant as a bureau or vanity. But pull down the lockable panel and you’ve uncovered a treasury of drawers and a convenient space for writing or checking email. We especially love the dentil molding rimming the top and the hand-applied Swedish grey or limed oak finish. Pieces like this satisfy many needs: beauty, utility, space-savings.

Modern. Rustic. Eclectic. Traditional. No matter what styling you lean toward in décor, including one contrasting piece will reinforce the look and give the feeling dimension. A chair or table that has heirloom sophistication is often a great choice.

Sophisticated pieces are chameleons. They blend while they accent. One of our best sellers is the exquisite Fontaine Wingback Chair. Every detail was carefully considered at the design stage, and it resulted in a hand crafted masterpiece of savoir-faire.

From it’s deeply tufted, curvaceous front and arms, to the deconstructed burlap back and solid birch frame and turned legs—every inch is refined and graceful. It was modeled after an 1800’s wingback we found in the Avignon débellage market and we’re so glad we spotted it!

Hopefully we’ve given you a few ideas. Now it’s time to take the first step to energize and revive your room décor that’s grown a little dull and routine. Pick a room and look around with fresh eyes. Can you eliminate seldom-used furniture? Can you think of one or two words to describe the mood change you’d like to create? Do you need one statement piece to pull off a transformation? (That can be as big as a table or sofa, or as small as a pillow or lamp.)
