Pattern Play: How to Wear & How to Pair Printed Skirts

By on April 21, 2015, in Soft Surroundings

Nothing revitalizes a spring wardrobe like a print skirt, and yet many of us avoid them, afraid they might be overwhelming on our figures. Luckily for us, this spring season is a season of sophisticated (and did we mention flattering?) print skirts that go with everything.

Dipping your toe into the print skirt world is easy if you just follow a few simple guidelines.

-If you’re looking to minimize your lower half, balance the print skirt with a solid top in a lighter or brighter color that closely matches a color from the skirt.

-If you’re looking to draw attention to the skirt and/or minimize your upper body, then opt for a top with a darker or more muted color from the skirt.

-If you want to keep a long and lean silhouette, make sure to opt for a top in a low-contrast color.

-If the skirt is slim-fitting, balance it with a longer and/or more softly draping top. Of course, if the skirt has an easy, flowing fit, a more body-skimming top is in order.

-The beauty of some of the tonal black and white prints, this season means that you can experiment with a range of colorful tops, too.

No matter what you top your skirt with, remember that the print will speak for itself and will look best with some simple jewelry pieces and flat or low-heeled sandals.

Flights of Fancy

We love the Antibes Skirt for its soft, romantic wash of blue ombre tie dye that makes the chiffon skirt elegantly ethereal. Paired with a body skimming top in a complimentary pastel, it’s nothing less than lovely. The Spring Fever Skirt features a flutter of butterflies across a neutral background that makes this sweeping, paneled skirt infinitely versatile with both dark and light-colored tops and pops of bright jewelry.

Tonal Tropical

The swirling pen-and-ink print of the Summer Breeze Skirt has artistic appeal and is incredibly versatile. The black and white design of this sweeping viscose skirt looks good with neutrals and colors alike. The flirty, flouncy, tiered layers of supremely soft Knit Layer Skirt will have you sashaying into the season in style and comfort. It will look best with a top that has a long and lean silhouette. Palm fronds are breezily scattered across the swingy, jersey knit panels of the Summer Palm Skirt. Top this skirt with a body-skimming top in a complimentary neutral color, bright white or a beautiful shade of blue.

I wish you’d have …. size ordered, height, and weight in your reviews.
Your sizes are always iffy, mainly too big.
If people review a product and put in their size ordered, height, and weight…then it would be easier to order. Shipping costs too much to make guess.

Thanks for reading Beth and thanks for the suggestion! Was there a particular skirt and top combo you were looking to buy? We would be more than happy to identify the shirt for you- just let us know.

Thank you this was VERY useful. You might consider including links to the tops shown. I would have ordered it right away.

Hi Cheryl, we’re so happy to hear you love the beautiful skirt combinations! We would love to help you find the top you are looking for- can you tell us which skirt it is paired with or which image you are looking at specifically? Some of these skirts are no longer available, but many of the tops still are!

Would like a link to shirts shown with skirts or pants that work beautifully together as you show them. Did I miss the link? Have to go hunting for the top as shown.
