The White Pant Now — and Later

History has it that a handful of socialites concocted the “no white after Labor Day” rule in the late 1800s. From there it mysteriously grew into a strict no-no that was firmly in place by the 1950s. (Keep in mind fashion icons such as Coco Chanel completely ignored it.)

As fashion continues to evolve (and loosen up), it’s no surprise that this rule has gone out the window. No longer confined to the window of time between Memorial Day and Labor Day, white has now become a staple on the runways all year long.

Fresh and unexpected in the colder months, the best way to transition white from summer into fall and winter is to stick with chic, streamlined styles in more substantial fabrics.

White pants, particularly in denim and tailored stretch knits, are the perfect canvas for showcasing the look. The key is in the layering: Wear white pants now with bright, breezy tunics and strappy sandals; wear later with chunky sweaters, ballet flats, and boots in darker colors.

The slimming Skinny Stretch Pants and Yummie Ankle Jeans look great now with tanks and tunics, and will both look great later with ballet flats and cardigans. The Relaxed Leggings feature easy, pull-on styling and a flattering front-contour waistband — all that’s needed is a change of layers to greet the cooler temps.

The super-slimming Knit Leggings and bestselling Metro Leggings were made for walking — and fall boots! Perfect now with summer footwear, they will both look fabulous with sweaters, booties, and boots once there’s a chill in the air. You can’t go wrong with the Classic Jean, either. These sculpting wonders look fantastic in white no matter the season.
