Home Away From Home: How to Make Your Holiday Guests Feel At Home

Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays
Cause no matter how far away you roam
If you want to be happy in a million ways
For the holidays, you can’t beat home, sweet home.

It’s that time. The time when friends and family take to the roads and the air to visit the people they love during the holidays. And it’s just as true today as it was in 1954 when the song Home for the Holidays was recorded—you want them to be comfortable when they arrive and throughout their stay.

Here are a few ideas to keep your holiday house guests cozy and feeling well cared for…

The minute they walk in the door, greet them with a warm smile and a warm-and-ready house. Create a holiday feeling in an unexpected way on the entry table. Decorate it with greenery, mercury glass and candles. Add a place card holder or a vintage chalkboard with a welcome message to your guests using their name. They’ll feel special the second they set down their bags.

Make sure the entryway is clean, tidy and has room for guest’s coats in the closet, on the coat rack or hall tree. Throughout the year, these areas can become overrun with off-season coats, clothes, equipment, and more. Take 15 minutes to remove and relocate some of the not-needed-now stuff and add some guest hangers to the closet.

Holiday pillows on the couch or chairs are one of the easiest ways to make your guests feel welcome and our Holiday Sayings Pillows do it with such style. Whether you choose one with a message that’s sweet, silly or sentimental (or all three!), your guests will love the sentiment.

Think like a luxury hotel and supply a sumptuously soft robe for your guests to wrap up in. Our Classic Chenille Robe is a perfect choice. It gets our ultimate softness rating and it has a cuddly shawl collar, self ties and shaped back waistband. In blush pink, blue lagoon or classic ivory, it will be a welcome indulgence and signal to your guests they should feel at home.

Fresh bedding is a must. Nothing helps a guest relax and enjoy their stay more than a comfortable, well appointed bed. Layer the bed in your guestroom with softness, starting with the sheets. Our Blissful Bamboo Sheet Set is every bit as opulent as those in luxury resorts, and they’re as soft as silk. Plus, the rayon fabric made from bamboo adjusts to your body temperature for a comfortable night’s sleep. Or if your guest will enjoy a vintage touch, consider our Cora Crochet Sheet Set. The scalloped lace adds an heirloom air to these cotton percale sheets. They are a beautiful compliment to our Velvet Damask Quilt.

Blankets and throws, soft and plush, are also necessities for your holiday guests. We have a bit of an obsession for the softest and the plushest of these! Choose from our faux fur, sumptuous chenille, or our Cashmere Like Throw and Blanket. On the guest bed or tossed on a chair in a cozy nook, your visitors will reach for these lovelies time and time again.

Place a candle by the bed as one more gift for your guest’s senses during the holidays. It seems so wondrous that a candle can warm a room with just a single flame, but it is certainly true! Our Cloche Dome Candle is a gorgeous option. It shines with an old-world glow that reminds you of Dickens and It’s a Wonderful Life. And our Nest Holiday Candle, with its combination of pomegranate, mandarin orange, pine, cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and amber imparts the fragrant essence of the season.

Don’t forget the slippers. Our Sophia Slippers are pretty and plush, with embroidered flowers, micro suede and a fluffy cuff. Pair them with our Margeaux Gown or PJs and your guest might not want to leave!

Flameless Candles are a versatile alternative when decorating for holiday visitors. Since they eliminate the worry of fire, you can nestle them in and around greenery, paper decorations, even water. Our Festive Forest Flameless and Metallic Flameless Tapers are two of our latest additions.07004

Comfort is in the details, like having your guest’s favorite type of tea handy, or placing a best-loved book or holiday DVD on the bedside table. If you have an extra laptop, iPad or Kindle, let your guest use them for the length of their stay.

A Welcome Basket of goodies in the guest room is another nice touch. Load it with a few dark and luscious chocolates, a bottle of water, an extra phone charger (in case theirs was left at home by mistake) and some rich and fragrant beauty supplies like our Alessandro Hand Spa Cream Rich or our Shea Butter Hand Creme and Soap Set. Include an assortment of Herban Essentials Mini Towelettes and your guests will never forget the eucalyptus or peppermint rejuvenation they provide.

Erase the holiday frazzles that are almost inevitable during this stressful season by placing a packet of Rodial Dragon’s Blood Eye Masks in the guest bath or welcome basket. These innovative eye masks are placed under the eyes for about 20-30 minutes. They reduce the look of puffiness and dark circles and give your guests a good excuse to close their eyes and relax for half an hour. (And of course, the hostess should take advantage of these too!)

Last but not least, pack up a good-bye goodie bag to give your guests before they depart. Think of it like a holiday stocking to go. Fill it with a few surprise indulgences to keep the season of giving going. Some choices might be the Aya Blu Eau de Toilette Rollerball or Gilda Eau de Parfum Purse Spray. An Essential Infinity or Ziggy Scarf would also be a merry parting gift to keep your guests cozy on the trip back. And if they’re flying, include a pair of Sleepy Sheepy Socks. They can slip off their shoes and warm their toes on the plane home.
