Easy tips for a beautiful, streak-free tan right out of the bottle.

DON’T Skip Skin Prep

To get a smooth, even tan it’s vital to make sure your skin is a smooth, lovely canvas to receive your color. Exfoliate first to whisk away dry, scaly skin. We love ageless supermodel Christie Brinkley’s Complete Clarity Daily Facial Exfoliating Polish. If your body is dehydrated or stressed, it will also reflect on skin and affect the quality of your tan. Get your 8 glasses of H2O a day and avoid known dehydrators like alcohol before tanning. Make sure you’ve let your lotion fully absorb before tanning or the color won’t take as well.

DON’T Use Your Hands

Using your fingers to spread the self-tanner over your body will not only leave your palms unnaturally tan, but you’ll also be more likely to end up with streaky, uneven color. A mitt helps evenly distribute your glow, especially on hard-to-reach areas like your back, and keeps your hands pristine. Be sure to wash your mitt regularly to reduce the risk of breakouts.

DON’T End Up with a Streaky, Tell-Tale Tan

Just as important as the right self-tanner is the right tanning technique. A successful self-tan looks subtle, streak-free and natural. Shake your product well and apply liberally. Too-little tanner on your mitt can leave you stripey rather than stunning. Buff your body with even, broad strokes. Afterwards, be sure to whisk a wet washcloth over spots that don’t naturally tan like palms and toes. Check edges like your jawline and swipe your washcloth over spots that might collect too much tanner like knees, elbows and ankles. You can also dab a little Vaseline on fingernails and toenails to keep them stain-free.

DON’T Tan at the Wrong Time

The secret to a lasting, even tan is picking the proper time to apply. Tanning immediately after shaving or waxing when pores are still open can give you a spotty appearance. And tanning first, then shaving will simply slough away your gorgeous new color. Wait at least 24 hours before or after hair removal to tan. Also skip tanning after using shower gel with essential oils which can keep your tan from properly developing. Ideally let your color cure for 6-8 hours before showering or swimming. Pool or seawater can fade tans more quickly.

DON’T Ruin It!

So now that your skin is sunkissed and flawless, keep it that way with a few simple tips. Wait to apply lotion or you risk diluting your golden glow. pHenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Mousse by Vita Liberata locks in moisture so you don’t even need that lotion. When you do shower, don’t rub your skin with a towel. Pat, pat, pat away the water to keep your glorious color. And most importantly, don’t sabotage your tan with a sunburn! Self-tanner is not sun protection, so be sure to shield your skin from the sun with SPF! Sunforgettable by Colorescience is a simple mineral powder sunscreen you can wear right over your makeup!
