Women Over 50 in Black and White: Style Sweet Spot

Is there ever a time when wearing black and white is inappropriate? I don’t think so. Unless you count a themed party when you’re told to wear another color. Even then, I might wear black, because I refuse to wear an unflattering color. Black and white is classic and timeless.

Style has the power to transform your confidence. Working from the outside in, women can boost their confidence by hitting their Style Sweet Spot. Pam Lutrell and I began this new series, Hit Your Style Sweet Spot, to help and inspire those women who are struggling with their appearance. Each week we choose a scenario from our daily lives to show why, what and how we dress to reach our style sweet spot. Your style sweet spot is when you feel confident about your appearance and know you are sending the message you want people to see.

Last week Pam and I showed how we dress for Brunch and I shared the power of asymmetry in fashion for the woman over 50. This week we’re showing how we dress in black and white.

Style Tip- Over-sized, boxy woven shirts, tend to enlarge the look of your torso.

This top is also asymmetrical. Notice the diagonal seam on the front, where the stripes intersect. Even though the shirt is loose and flowing, that seam draws an imaginary line at my waist. This makes it appear more fitted, feminine and flattering. This shirt doesn’t look boxy because of the angle of stripes and seaming detail.

I love the Standout Shirt’s high-low hem. It’s a very soft cotton/viscose and flows nicely. It’ll feel cool and comfortable when the weather heats up. Its side panels drape, to give it a feeling of movement. It’s technically black and white, but the overall effect is softer because of the stripe.

This shirt looks great coming and going. Sometimes we forget, that how we look from the back, matters too.

Style Tip- The back of your outfit is often the last impression you leave. Make sure you like it.

Here’s my Soft Surroundings Metro Leggings again. They’re called leggings but are really a pull-on style jean. They have tons of stretch, a wide waistband and no front zipper or snap to bulge at my waist.
